NSI at AMTA 2008

NSI had another great show at last year’s Antenna Measurement Techniques Association 30th Annual Symposium & Meeting (AMTA 2008) in Boston, MA during the week of November 16-20th.  The Symposium was held at The Boston Plaza Park Hotel & Plaza in downtown Boston and drew over 500 registered attendees and 46 exhibitors.

The NSI exhibit booth showcased a total of six displays, many containing live demonstrations.  Highlights of this past year’s exhibit were a CATR measurement system using a reflector supplied by IAMS, and a historical display celebrating 20 years of NSI innovation. NSI presented seven technical papers at AMTA 2008.

Kim Hassett Elected
to AMTA BOD

NSI’s Kim Hassett was elected to the 2009 AMTA Board of Directors and will be serving as treasurer for the coming year.  Dr. Javier Marti-Canales of the European Space Agency was the other elected board member and will be serving as AMTA secretary.  Two AMTA board members are elected each year during the Annual Symposium and Meeting, and serve for a 3-year term.

Greg Hindman Awarded
AMTA Gillespie Fellowship

Each year, AMTA recognizes select members with the Edmond S. Gillespie Fellowship Award for their outstanding and pioneering contributions to the theory, practice and art of antenna and RF measurements.  At AMTA 2008, Greg Hindman was one of three recipients honored as a Gillespie Fellow.   Congratulations Greg!

NSI Short Course 2009

NSI will once again be offering its annual Short Course at our NSI headquarters in Torrance, CA on March 3 – 6, 2009.   This course, presented by our resident NSI experts, offers an in-depth review of near-field theory and measurement techniques.  This is a great opportunity for existing users to learn more about their systems and current testing techniques, as well as introducing prospective, new users to antenna near-field measurements.  Seats are limited and available on a first come, first serve basis so make your reservations early.  Additional information on the NSI Short Course and other NSI sponsored courses can be found on our website at:

NSI Enters CATR Market

NSI announced entry into the Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) market at AMTA 2008 in Boston, MA. This announcement represents further diversification of NSI antenna measurement solutions. The reflectors being offered use an optimized blended rolled-edge reflector termination resulting in minimum level of diffraction. The single piece construction used on many of the reflectors removes issues associated with panelized reflectors. The ultra-lightweight, graphite-epoxy-honeycomb composite design provides an extremely rigid and stable system with low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) and very high flexure strength. The rolled edge reflector is a graphite-epoxy composite design using aerospace-grade materials. It includes a precision tooling steel frame structure support. The system includes broadband/wide beamwidth feeds covering 2-18 and 18-40 GHz. The reflector surface tolerance can support measurement up to 110 GHz. Combined with NSI positioners, RF sub-systems and NSI software, these CATR systems represent state of the art antenna test solutiuons. The standard reflector sizes currently offered are:

Model Size Quiet Zone
NSI-RF-CATR-7x6
7' x 6'
(2.1 m x 1.8 m)
3.5' x 2.25'
(1.1 m x 0.7 m)
NSI-RF-CATR-10x10
10'x10'
(3.0 m x 3.0 m)
5' x5'
(1.5 m x 1.5 m)
NSI-RF-CATR-20x20
20'x20'
(6.1 m x 6.1 m)
10' x 10'
(3.0 m x 3.0 m)

Frequency range: 2 - 40 GHz
Amplitude taper: < 1 dB
Phase taper: < 10 deg

NSI Attends ISAP 2008 in Taiwan

NSI attended the October ISAP 2008 show in Taipei, Taiwan. This annual event is one of the premier antenna conferences for Taiwan. Conference presentations focus on updates in antenna design and other related disciplines for a wide variety of antennas, from phased arrays to small mobile antennas.  Active participants from both the academic and commercial communities were present.

NSI co-sponsored a display booth with its Taiwan representative "Wavepro" and demonstrated a NSI-700S-90 system with an Agilent 8960 Wireless Communications Test Set and an Agilent PNA Vector Network Analyzer

"Measurements of small antennas and mobile devices (OTA measurements) are of great importance to Taiwan companies and universities", says Greg Masters of NSI.

Masters goes on to say, "NSI has positioned itself to be a major player in the Taiwan test market.  Our reputation and that of our partner Wavepro, who provides shielded anechoic chambers and aftermarket support, make our team a "One-Stop Shop" for the commercial Taiwan antenna and OTA measurement market.”

NSI Attends Microwave Workshop in Yokohama, Japan

Nearfield Systems, Inc. (NSI) exhibited at this year's Microwave Workshop and Exhibition (MWE2008) held in Yokohama Japan on November 26-28. The exhibition was held at the Pacifico Yokohama Exhibition center and hosted more than 350 exhibitors from all over the world. NSI shared a booth with its Japanese representative FARAD Corp. John Demas, VP of Operations, supported the event and ran live demonstrations of NSI's high speed NSI-700S-20 spherical measurement system.  The system was setup using a PNA-X vector network analyzer and was making live measurements of an X-band horn antenna.  The system was taking multi-frequency data on the fly and was making full spherical measurements in less than 4 minutes.  The system is capable of taking standard antenna pattern measurements or can be supplied with optional capability to make CTIA over the air cell phone measurements.

NSI has been providing antenna measurement solutions to the Japanese market for over 10 years and enjoys strong relationships with numerous customers including Toshiba, MELCO, JDA and NHK.
